ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China have agreed to establish a joint training centre for space science to boost cooperation in astronaut training, as part of their newly announced five-year action plan.

The initiative falls under the Action Plan (2025–2029) for advancing the China-Pakistan partnership in the new era. It also builds on the ongoing 2021–2030 Space Cooperation Outline Program, signed between the China National Space Administration and Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to work together on lunar and deep space exploration, including multilayered studies of the International Lunar Research Station, while also enhancing collaboration in advanced space technologies.

The joint action plan outlines the selection and training of astronauts, a step that could eventually allow Pakistan to take part in human spaceflight missions in partnership with China.

Another key feature of the plan is the continued discussion on the establishment of the Pakistan Space Center, envisioned as a hub for research, development, and practical applications of space technologies aimed at supporting economic growth and social development.

China and Pakistan also agreed to strengthen cooperation through the international version of the China Platform of Earth Observation System, giving Pakistan access to cutting-edge remote sensing and satellite technologies. These capabilities will support crucial sectors such as agriculture, disaster prevention, water resource management, climate monitoring, and urban planning.

Officials emphasized that the action plan highlights the importance of space technologies for Pakistan’s economic modernization, while deepening strategic cooperation between the two allies.

Both sides noted that their long-standing partnership in space science and technology is not only mutually beneficial but also strategically significant. The move reflects a shared determination to expand collaboration in frontier fields, alongside traditional areas such as trade, infrastructure, and defense.
