Ego Nwodim has
announced her departure from Saturday Night Live, surprising fans and
marking yet another major change to the show’s evolving cast.
The 37-year-old comedian revealed the news Thursday in an Instagram
story, saying it was time to move on after seven memorable seasons. Her
announcement came as a surprise, especially since NBC had just listed her as
part of the Season 51 lineup days earlier.
Sharing a heartfelt note, Nwodim wrote: “The hardest part
of a great party is knowing when to say goodnight. But after seven
unforgettable seasons, I have decided to leave SNL. I am immensely grateful to
Lorne for the opportunity, to my castmates, the writers, and the crew for their
brilliance, support and friendship. Week after week on that stage taught me
more than I could have ever imagined, and I will carry those memories (and that
laughter) with me always. Now invite me to your weddings please!!!”
Her exit adds to what many fans are calling a
significant cast shake-up. In recent weeks, Heidi Gardner left after eight
seasons, while newer cast members Michael Longfellow, Emil Wakim, and Devon Walker
also departed.
Show creator Lorne Michaels had previously hinted at
major changes coming ahead of Season 51, which premieres October 4.
Despite the departures, SNL still boasts a
strong roster that includes Kenan Thompson, Bowen Yang, Chloe Fineman, and Weekend Update
anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost. But with Nwodim’s goodbye, audiences are
preparing for a very different-looking show this fall.
