Taylor Swift is on the brink of overtaking Madonna to become the best-selling female artist of all time.

At 35, the singer—who first shot to fame with her 2006 debut single Tim McGraw—is expected to surpass Madonna’s career sales record with the release of her highly anticipated 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl.

Madonna, 67, currently holds the crown with an estimated 252 million records sold worldwide. Swift is close behind with 248 million, narrowing a gap that is likely to close once her new album drops.

Swift has already surpassed the Queen of Pop on other fronts. Earlier this year, she broke Madonna’s long-standing record for the most UK number-one albums following the release of Lover.

While Madonna was forced to put her 15th studio album on hold after being hospitalized last year, Swift has been moving full steam ahead. Industry insiders say the Shake It Off hitmaker took extraordinary precautions during production to prevent leaks. “Taylor vetted everyone involved in the record and only agreed to work with them if she could trust they wouldn’t leak anything,” a source told Daily Mail.

The milestone comes on the heels of another major life event: Swift’s engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce, announced just last month.

The Life of a Showgirl is slated for release on Friday, October 3, and is widely expected to cement Swift’s place in music history as the top-selling female artist of all time.
